Yunka: A new Peruvian-Japanese spot spicing things up in Ho Chi Minh City

Source: Yunka

Right smack dab in the lively heart of Saigon, you'll find YUNKA holding court at 80 Dong Khoi Street, District 1. This joint isn't just any old resto-bar—it's a vibrant mashup of cultures, flavours, and pure energy (the live DJ helps). Crafted by the cool cats at StudioDuo, YUNKA blends Peru's rich architectural vibes with Japan's sleek finesse, making this perhaps one of the sexiest dining experiences in Vietnam right now.

"YUNKA," grabbed from Quechua, paints this picture of pure, untouched beauty, like those lush jungles and forests you see in travel brochures. It's the perfect name for a spot that wants to sweep you off your feet with its lush vibes and irresistible charm.

Getting YUNKA off the ground was as wild as the flavours it dishes up. Inspired by the global hype around Peruvian cuisine, especially hotspots like Central and Maido in Lima, the gang wanted to bring that Nikkei Peruvian fusion to Saigon. So they put their faith in Chef López, a Nikkei mastermind, to blend those flavours into something truly epic. Now, they're kicking it in the old Tu Do nightclub. The same crew behind Momentum Hospitality (think CLAY Saigon, The Brix, and Tinto) in District 2's Thao Dien Ward.

YUNKA's all about those Peruvian-Japanese vibes serving up everything from ceviches to sushi rolls, yakitori, and Wagyu steaks. And oh boy, don't sleep on their killer cocktails like the Spicy Mango Margarita, plus a load of sours and sakes to keep the party going. Inside, it's like elegance meets downtown cool, with plush plum lampshades, funky green tiles, and gold stools that'll make your Instagram pop. Plus, you get a sweet view of Dong Khoi and Dong Du streets to top it off.

Meet new-to-Vietnam Peruvian Chef Pier Lopes

Straight outta Huancayo, Peru, Chef Pierre López is the culinary wizard behind YUNKA's vibrant flavors. Trained at Cordon Bleu University, Lima, his journey's been a wild ride of passion and creativity. Hooked on the fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, Chef López made waves at Maido Nikkei restaurant, racking up accolades like nobody's business. Then, he took his talents to Kenya, where INTI stole hearts and won awards left and right. Now, in 2024, he's landed in Ho Chi Minh City, ready to rock your taste buds at YUNKA.

With his knack for blending Nikkei flavors and a keen eye for detail, Chef López promises a dining experience like no other. YUNKA isn't just a restaurant; it's a journey through the vibrant world of Nikkei cuisine, guided by Chef López's culinary genius. So, if you're up for an adventure in flavors, join Chef López at YUNKA and get ready to be wowed.
